I believe the AdWords pay-per-click (PPC) market is approaching saturation in many sectors.
That means clicks are getting more expensive, because more companies are bidding to get those clicks.
Now, it’s still possible to make a profit (a good profit, in many cases) from AdWords.
Plus, the great thing about AdWords is that it’s an ever-present stream of available traffic t hat you can switch on or off whenever you like.
The trick, of course, is making a profit from those clicks. The businesses that can make the most lifetime customer value from a click can afford to bid more, and outbid poorer-performing competitors that can’t generate as much revenue per visitor.
Plus, over time, the strong will get stronger, because they’re the ones making more money from every click — and getting more clicks!
That’s one of the root injustices about the world of online business. Whereas in the offline business world, the market won’t usually support a monopoly with over 50% market share, online you can find many big players with around 80% share (Google, eBay, Amazon etc.)
But hey, if you want to compete, get over it. Or leave the game. There are no other options I’m afraid.
The Choice Before You
Pay-per-click represents a big ol’ chunk of the traffic available to your business. If you’re just starting out, it could represent pretty much all of the available traffic. And it’s a traffic source that isn’t going away any time soon.
So, what are you going to do: Play? Or Quit?
If you’re going to play, you’ve gotta be competitive. What that means today is, you must pay close attention to long-term customer value.
I think today it’s a mistake to let anyone focus on traffic alone: whether it’s someone internal to your business, or you subcontract traffic generation to an external agency.
AdWords, pay-per-click, SEO, social media, email marketing, offline… all this stuff is marketing, and it’s all about one thing — PROFIT.
It’s not about traffic, it’s not about clicks, it’s not about cost of clicks, it’s not about likes, shares, inbound links, click-through rates, conversion rates, retention rates, up-sells, cross-sells, repeat visits, branding, positioning, pricing strategy, competitive research…
It’s about ALL THAT STUFF!
It all matters!
The weak will perish. The strong will not just survive, they’ll thrive.

- Had a go yourself without knowing how to do it right, or you’ve
- Paid that money out to someone else who doesn’t know how to do it right.
