You know there are people with less brains than you, less talent, less education, and who’ve enjoyed none of the support you have been given. These people are making fortunes, building amazing things, and changing the world.
It’s time for you to join them.
This is not a feel-good post. Yes, I want it to inspire you. But I also want it to challenge you, and hopefully scare you too. Because this is about unleashing an awesome force of Nature – the power of the human mind and spirit. In particular, yours!
I want to give you something you can use immediately to make a real and massive transformation: a process for realizing and for being your most magnificent self. That prospect should inspire and terrify.
Here’s the basic problem we’re going to address.
You Are Thinking Too Small
Practically everyone is. I’m not saying that’s wrong. The world we live in is built on the assumption that we do. Employers need people to turn the handles and run the machines, stuff envelopes and answer the phones.
There’s a huge thing called an economy that depends on you thinking small.
If you’re content in your job and in your life, paying your taxes, trusting your government to take care of you in retirement, then you can stop reading at this point. You don’t need to read this. You’re fine.
There’s probably something good on TV. Maybe a superhero movie. Everyone likes those.
Maybe you agree with me that there’s something more. Maybe you’ve been holding on to a nagging feeling that you are somehow meant for better things. Maybe you want to be part of something awesome!
If that’s you, you’re not alone. There are millions of others just like you, who have been convinced that we’re freaks or misfits. But we’re not. We’re the ones who just KNOW somewhere deep inside that there’s something better, that WE’RE someone better than the life we’ve been offered.
That mental itch is not a problem. There is nothing wrong with you. In fact, it’s a sign of something amazing.
You’re just a slumbering hero. And there are many others, each one unique and each one potentially amazing.
The truth is that you have far more power than you have ever used.
That’s not some new age crap. It’s a fact!
I bet you can think of several things you could have done to make a big difference in the world and that you simply didn’t bother to do, just in the past few days. They could have been small things, like helping a stranger.
That’s you not exercising your power. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Again, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong. It’s just playing small. And I believe that playing small may not be very good for our health, emotionally, psychologically, or spiritually.
You Are Unique
That’s also a fact. No other human being alive today or who has ever lived has your perspective, your experience, your exact combination of skills, or your potential.
I’m not necessarily saying you’re wonderfully and amazingly unique. (At least, not yet.)
Most people live their whole lives without ever discovering their true greatness. We act stupid, scared, and small.
I don’t think we are meant to live that way. I think we are born to live bold, passionate, creative lives.
Who ARE You?
That’s the ultimate question. It is not as simple to answer as it might seem.
- You are not your genes, although they are part of you.
- You are not your past, although that is part of you.
- You are not your successes or failures.
- You are not what other people think of you or say about you.
Sure, all those things are real, and they all make you unique, but they are not who you ARE.
- You are not how much money is currently in your possession. The world would have us thinking that our money is our “worth” but that is false.
- You are not what you do, although that is an expression of you. Obviously, you can act in ways that you know are not true for you.
- For the same reason, you are not your values or your beliefs. Beliefs are not necessarily unique. We can wear beliefs like garments, and we can change them in the face of new evidence.
Who you ARE cannot be expressed in relative terms. If your identity depends on being the best, richest, most famous or most popular, that isn’t absolute and could be taken away if someone better or richer or more famous or popular came along.
So who you ARE is who you ARE irrespective of anyone or anything else.
Who you ARE must be absolute and unchanging. It must be something else, besides all that other stuff. You might call it soul or spirit, but it’s your eternal essential self.
Ultimately, You ARE Who You ARE
Your true identity is eternal and unfathomable. It cannot be fully expressed in words or art or music. It cannot be measured or detected.
Your truest self is not your ego.
In A Course In Miracles the word ego is used to describe the belief in your dream character, the person who seems to be the doer and be affected by everything within the world. This is contrasted with the true self of the Holy Spirit, formless and ever perfect. The closest thing to a definition of ego in A Course in Miracles is below “The ego is nothing more than a part of your belief about yourself.” (Source)
You may discover more about who you ARE through reflection and exploration. But that process is never-ending. Your ultimate being is always there in the centre, perfectly unique, ultimately unknowable and yet always present.
So the goal of this process is not to know that ultimate, divine YOU. That’s already there, and there is nothing to be done. It is helpful to hold the knowledge that the ultimate YOU is already and always there, and will never change.
But that is not what we are concerned with.
We are concerned with you in the world, which is an expression of the ultimate YOU.
And it is no less important. It is divinity expressed, made flesh if you like. It is YOU experiencing, making an impact, living and loving and losing.
So we could say your time-based ego is very much part of who you actively are. You are eternal and you are time-based.
This is the part of you that you get to choose.
And there are so many choices!
- You may choose to be your bank balance.
- You may choose to be your job.
- You may choose to be your beliefs.
- You may choose to be your tribe.
- You may choose to be your car, house, clothes, or possessions.
- You may choose to be your achievements or failures.
- You may choose to be your partner’s partner.
Or… You may choose to be something else, something that is true to who you really ARE, somebody awesome and inspiring and even disruptive and dangerous.
It All Starts With Being
We are human beings, not human doings. And being is not passive. It’s something we choose to do in every moment. Our being is what defines us in the world.
Here are some of the elements that make you.
- Essential, eternal spirit
- Who you choose to be
When all of these elements are aligned, you are in integrity, and then you can do incredible things.
If you are out of line, well, you might achieve success, but it will be within ordinary parameters.
As we’ve seen, the most essential YOU is ultimately unknowable. It’s like a black box. But there are ways you can discover truths about that self…
The way that works for me is to try on ideas and to allow myself to feel how the idea fits. Does it feel right, aligned with my soul-self, at this point on my journey?
So Who Do You Choose To Be?
We do what we do, and we achieve what we achieve, because of who we ARE — and that is a combination of our deepest soul-self and who we choose to BE.
If you ARE “not good enough” then you will live a “not good enough” life. How could you do otherwise?
You’ll try to appear good enough, successful, attractive, interesting… But you know what? Whatever you DO, what other people see and feel and sense will be “not good enough”.
The great news is, you are the author of your life.
If who you choose to be is going to inspire you, that should be forward-thinking. If you choose to be the product of your past experiences and actions, that’s going to bring you what you’ve always got.
So your chosen super-identity should pull you forward into a thrilling future. It should be inspiring (but not necessarily comfortable).
There are so many thing we’re supposed to be…
- A good listener
You can’t be being all those things at the same time.
Consider that maybe, you aren’t meant to be anything.
You’re just meant to be who you choose to be.
So let’s choose!
Most human beings are being Clark Kent, going through life concealing their special powers. Occasionally, we may do something bold and magnificent. Sometimes life calls for massive action. But, much of the time, we use activity to avoid being our superhero self.
8 Great Ways to Be More Clark
- Don’t delegate, do everything yourself.
- Be a perfectionist.
- Keep yourself busy all the time.
- Be overly humble. Hide your talents, passions, and dreams. No one cares anyway. It’s OK to have humility, as long as you don’t let it stop you.
- Do stuff that just isn’t you.
- Self-doubt. Every single other person in the world has a different perspective to you, different values to you. So is everyone wrong? Or, is everyone right?
- Complain. A great way to complain is to say, “It’s not fair!” No, it isn’t. It never was. It never will be. Get over it. The question is, what will you BE in that unfairness.
- Fit in.
Do you know that people are more attracted to big, bold ideas? That means it’s actually easier to succeed BIG than it is to succeed SMALL.
“We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question which divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct.” (Niels Bohr)
There’s always room at the top. The ultimate is actually easy to aim for. You can make the world’s fastest car, but how would you go about making the world’s most average one?
Outliers change the world. No normal person ever changed the world through ordinary action. Because they wouldn’t be normal, would they?!
So quit trying to be normal, because that is not your path.
You are also attracted and energized by big, bold ideas. Does the idea of your work make you tired? That’s a sign that you’re doing something that’s too small for your spirit.
How We Suppress Ourselves
We are all suppressed. How? By standardization, by education, by TV, by shitty food and shitty jobs and shitty entertainment.
Who gave you the idea that keeping your head down and playing small was the right way to go? (Hint: Start looking at the Industrial Revolution and how religion was used to keep people in line.)
We’re indoctrinated that financial wealth and celebrity are the path to true happiness. If that’s true, why are so many celebrities so miserable?
No, we’re given celebrity because it’s so exclusive. There’s too little attention span going around for everyone to be TV-famous.
“I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it’s not the answer.” (Jim Carrey)
In 2006, two Princeton professors published the results of a study into wealth and happiness. They found…
“People with above-average income are relatively satisfied with their lives but are barely happier than others in moment-to-moment experience, tend to be more tense, and do not spend more time in particularly enjoyable activities.”
What they really don’t want you to do is to be your true, powerful, brilliant self. To be free. Today. Now.
(That scares the bejeezus out of them.)
Who are they? That’s easy. Just follow the money. They are the one percent. The people who own the banks and the media.
“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” (Voltaire)
But, you know what, we really don’t have to worry too much about them. The solution is simple.
How To Be Your Superhero Self
Here are just a few tips that work for me. Maybe they’ll work for you.
- Look in the mirror and ask, what if the world is waiting for ME? What if the parade is waiting for you to lead it?
- Don’t look around you at what to do. (You may look around you for what NOT to do.)
- Don’t fit in. There is no place for you in this world. You get to make your own.
- Own your future and your family’s future. Build it. Start now.
- Don’t work for others. Be your own boss. This is important.
- on’t be obsessed with end results, or cost. If it’s right, just do it.
- Don’t be obsessed with money. Richness is not about how much money you’ve got. It’s about how much good you’ve created.
- Step one for many of us is to break out of the money trap. (Read my recent book “How To Be Rich Today“).
- Exercise daily. Even if it is just a little. It’s the best way to start the day.
- Acknowledge that you already have everything you really need.
- Do not let fear stop you.
“Beware of destination addiction: a preoccupation with the idea that happiness is in the next place, the net job, and with the next partner. Until you give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are.” (Robert Holden, Director of The Happiness Project)
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” (Marianne Williamson, see interview)
